Gardening Jobs for June

Temperatures are rising and your garden should be just about ready to bloom. Here we outline those key jobs for June to keep your garden at its very best...

Weed, Water and Water some more...

Its vital to keep you garden hydrated during the summer months, particularly in hot spells. Focus on the areas that need it such as young plants and vegetables and make sure they get a thorough soaking. Mulching will help maintain the moisture around plants but be sure the soil is moist before you mulch as it keeps water out as well as in.

Keep on top of weeding regularly, pull out annual weeds making sure you remove from the root to avoid regrowth. Mow the lawn regularly, keeping the blades at the lowest setting, and trim the edges for a neat finish. If your lawn is looking a little tired use a liquid fertiliser to perk it up.

Tend to the Pond

You'll also need to keep on top of your aquatic plants by thinning out the older plants. Use a rake to remove floating weeds and remove decaying plant leaves as often as possible. Nows a good time to add to sparse looking ponds by introducing additional plants

Deadhead fading blooms

This is another job that should become routine to extend the life of the flowering period in your garden. Removing fading flowers on perennials as soon as possible ensures new growth and flowers later into the season.

Use secateurs to trim the plant back to just above the strongest buds. This will ensure new growth from the lower half of the plant and give it a healthy bushy shape.

Support tall plants

Keep your borders tidy by supporting and protecting taller plants from the elements. Its better to do this earlier however its not too late to stake with bamboo or sticks and as they grow, the support will be concealed by the plant.

Summer bedding

Theres little chance of frost now so you can fill your borders with some fantastic bedding plants. Remove any spring bedding and keep the fertiliser to a minimum. Water plants well an hour before planting and give them a soaking afterwards too. Its really important to keep on top of the watering throughout the summer.

The Kitchen Garden

Many of the early crops such as peas will be coming up for harvest around now but its important to keep sowing out salad vegetables to ensure a succession of crops throughout the Summer. Sow in small quantities regularly to keep them coming. As with the rest of the garden its important to keep vegatbles well watered in the warmer months. Your tomoatoes can go outside but its important to keep them supported with a frame, particularly if youre growing in bags using the  Humax Organic Fruit and Vegetable range

Protect your strawberries in wet weather by removing any moulded ones as this will quickly sprread to other plants and developing fruits. Try to keep the fruits off the soil using straw and keep the air flowing around the plants.

Its caterpillar season too so regaularly inspect plants for signs of eggs and remove if found.
